How to hire a landscape contractor
7 easy steps
You know you want to improve the look of your property, but you don’t know where to start. It’s easier than you think and you can do it in seven easy steps.
Step 1. Do your research
When you’re driving around your neighborhood take note of homes in the area that have landscape that appeals to you. If you see a picture in a magazine that you like, cut it out and save it. Make a list of all the landscape ideas you have, and what you want your landscape to do. You can even Google landscape pictures to get ideas.
Step 2. Decide on a budget.
One of the first things any contractor will ask you is how much you want to spend. Although you may be flexible on your landscape budget, you will want to have a general idea or range of how much you can afford. If it will be a big project, you may need to also budget for a landscape designer.
Step 3. Get contractor referrals
If you know anyone who has had a job done recently you can find out who they used. Don’t forget to ask what they did and didn’t like about the contractor. You can even stop by a home which has a beautiful landscape and knock on the front door to ask who they used. They will be happy to tell you.
Step 4. Talk to local plant nurseries
Many local nurseries that sell plants also do landscaping projects themselves. Even if they don’t, they will know who the good contractors in the area are and be happy to give you a referral.
Step 5. Contact at least three landscapers in your area
Each contractor will have their own strengths and weaknesses and you want to get a sense of who might be best for you. By talking to at least three, you should get a good feeling of who is likely to fit with your needs and budget.
Step 6. Be open to new ideas
As you talk to different people they will mention things that you hadn’t thought about. Be open and flexible because the best idea to make your project a success often comes from somebody else.
Step 7. Take the plunge
Don’t overthink your project. It’s supposed to be fun! Pick a contractor and look forward to the beauty of your new landscape.
